The dates for Alabama Boys State are May 25th – 31st, 2025.
Where is Alabama Boys Stated hosted?
The Alabama Boys State program is located on the campus of The University of Alabama.
What time do I have to arrive at Boys State?
Bring your registration card and with you this will speed up the registration process. Upon arrival at The University of Alabama, report to the Presidential Village dorm on the campus, where Boys State officials will be waiting to
register you. Registration will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 25th. Each student should arrive
no later than 1:00 p.m. on that date to attend this important first session at 1:30 p.m.
Where will delegates stay and eat meals at Boys State?
Dormitories on the campus will house all Boys Staters. There will be Counselor assigned to each floor of the
Dormitories. Meals will be served in the cafeteria. The first meal will be served at noon Sunday, May 25th and
the last meal will be breakfast May 31st. Money will be necessary for snacks and extra t shirts. You may bring
your own snacks if desired.
What should I do to prepare for the program?
Get plenty of rest! Boys State is a fast-paced program. Also, read the Program Schedule by clicking here. The more you know about the program the better you will fare. You may also want to brush up on your public speaking skills since you will need them!
Can I drive my car to the program?
You may drive to Boys State but your car “WILL NOT” be available to you during Boys State. You will turn
in your keys to your Counselor.
I must take medication. Where can I keep my medication while at Boys State?
Medications must be kept in the Boys State Headquarters. Medication will be dispensed to student by the headquarters staff and kept under lock and key. If any special medication requirements are needed please contact Christy Jones via email @ [email protected].
Do I have to participate in all activities?
Boys State is what you make it. If you don’t involve yourself, you are missing out on a great opportunity. Every activity has the potential to earn awards. The more you are involved, the better your city’s chances of succeeding, and the more you will take away from the program.
What kind of sporting activities are available?
Beginning on Monday of the program, there will be an athletic period each afternoon before the evening meal. Every citizen is required to participate in a variety of sporting events. Those events include basketball, various track & field events, and other sports as facilities are available.
Can I bring a musical instrument?
If you are interested in participating in the band and chorus you are welcome to bring your instrument. In fact, we encourage it!
What is a typical day like?
After reviewing the citizen’s schedule you’ll see that each day is packed with activity. Breakfast starts at 6:30 a.m. and “Lights Out” is at 10:30. Interest groups typically take place in the morning and lunch is at noon. Sports competitions are generally held in the afternoon. and General assembly’s featuring keynote speakers typically take place in the morning, noon, and evening.
What is the political structure of Boys State?
Boys State is a pure democracy in that every citizen is allowed to vote and participate in the political process. Each citizen will be assigned a political party prior to coming to Boys State. Boys State employs the two-party political system. The two parties at Boys State are called the Federalist Party and the Nationalist Party. Neither party is associated with any real-life political party. Each year, citizens develop their own party platforms and their own style of governing.
What offices can I run for?
There are elected offices on three levels – citywide, countywide, and statewide. You can run for any office you want whether it be Mayor of your city, or Governor of the whole state. All it takes is determination and the will to succeed. If you do not win an election, run for another office! Boys State runs on the leadership of its elected officials.
What should I do if I plan to run for office at Boys State?
If you are planning to run for office, you may prepare your campaign materials and related items in advance. However, campaign materials are not required. Use your imagination and resources as any political candidate would there is no limitation on what you may do as long as it is appropriate. Some students begin campaigning activities on arrival.
- No posters can be posted with sticky tac, masking tape, scotchtape, or double sided tape. This tapes will ruin the walls.
- Painters Tape is the only approved tape.
What scholarship opportunities are available to me?
Worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea’s aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. As of 2019 the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded more than $6.5 million in college scholarships to 2,266 applicants since its inception in 1996.

The American Legion Alabama Boys State is proud to partner with various universities across the state of Alabama to provide leadership and academic scholarships. To be eligible students must attend the American Legion Alabama Boys State and complete the weeklong program. To be considered for the additional scholarships provided by in state institutions to Alabama Boys State attendees, delegates should complete the online scholarship.

When is Boys State closing session and are parents allowed to attend?
The closing session will be Saturday, May 31st. It will start around 8:30 am and depending on how many students it should be over with around 10:00 am. Parents may attend if they would like to.
