Because of the unprecedented public health emergency caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, The American Legion Alabama Boys State Commission announces that it has postponed the 2020 American Legion Alabama Boys State to May 30th 2021 through June 5th 2021 to be held jointly with 2021 American Legion Alabama Boys State on the Campus of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. All students selected to attend the 2020 Alabama Boys State are invited to attend the Joint 2020/2021 Alabama Boys State. Since 1937 American Legion Alabama Boys State has taught high school students’ democracy and citizenship by experiencing it as they establish their own mock governments and serving in those positions of leadership. It is our commitment to allow this year’s high school juniors to have this experience.
American Legion Posts, Schools and sponsors are encouraged to continue to select and register delegates to the 2020 Alabama Boys State through June 15th 2020. The students selected as delegates to the 2020 Alabama Boys State will receive scholarships designated for Alabama Boys State participants to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and to the University of West Alabama and to Marion Military Institute. The students selected as delegates to the 2020 Alabama Boys State will receive a Certificate of Selection to the 2020 Alabama Boys State that may be used in their College application, their application for scholarships and be used in their resume. The 2020 Alabama Boys State Delegates are invited to attend Boys State in the summer of 2021.
The American Legion Alabama Boys State Staff and Commission will begin immediately to plan for the Joint 2020/2021 Alabama Boys State.
American Legion Posts, Districts and schools are encouraged to continue their selection process so that eligible students will be recognized, honored and be eligible for scholarships.
This decision is made in recognition of the responsibility that the organization has to the health and safety of the delegates, the volunteer counsellors, University of Alabama staff and students and the public.
